Lake effect snow and what it does to a booked pick up

It falls in narrow bands, so one suburb gets eight inches and the next gets nothing. That is why the desk asks where you are, not just when.

Snow covered suburban road at dawn with bare trees and a plough line along the kerb, no vehicles
The snowbelt on an ordinary January morning. Ten miles west there is bare pavement.

Every winter the desk has the same conversation with somebody who checked a forecast for Cleveland, saw two inches, and cannot understand why we are suggesting a pick up forty minutes earlier.

The reason is that a forecast for Cleveland is not a forecast for where they live.

Why it is local

Cold air crosses the open water of Lake Erie, picks up moisture, and drops it as soon as it reaches land and rises. The bands that form are narrow, often only a few miles across, and they sit wherever the wind direction puts them, sometimes for hours.

The practical consequence is extreme. Chardon can record eight inches while Lakewood records none, on the same morning, twenty five miles apart. A driver leaving from the west side may see clear pavement the entire way until the last three miles.

Where it lands

The eastern snowbelt takes most of it: Geauga County, the higher ground in eastern Cuyahoga County, Chesterland, Chardon and the Chagrin Valley. If your pick up is here between December and early March, assume snow is a factor until the morning proves otherwise.

Lake County along the shore gets bands that come in off the water and stop abruptly inland.

The west side, Lakewood through Westlake and into Lorain County, is materially drier. Not immune, but the odds are better.

Downtown and the airport corridor sit between the two. Hopkins itself is well equipped and rarely closes, and the runway is not usually the problem.

What the desk does about it

Watches the forecast on the day, not the week. Lake effect bands are not reliably predictable five days out. They are reasonably predictable twelve hours out.

Moves the pick up earlier where a band sits on the route. Typically 20 to 40 minutes for a suburban pick up, more from Geauga County. You are told the pick up has moved rather than discovering a vehicle arriving early.

Chooses the vehicle for the road. An SUV is a sensible choice from the snowbelt in February and a sedan is a sensible choice downtown in July. This is the one time the desk will actively suggest a class rather than simply matching the party size.

Tells you when a flight is at risk. Two or three mornings each winter the honest answer is that the run is doubtful. You will hear that from this desk the evening before, with what the alternatives are, rather than a reassurance that keeps the booking on the sheet.

What you can do

Book earlier in the winter than you would in June. An extra half hour costs nothing and removes the entire problem on all but the worst days.

Say where the vehicle actually has to reach. A long unploughed driveway on a rural road in Geauga County is a real obstacle. Telling the desk means the driver knows to allow for it or to suggest meeting at the road end.

Give the flight number. On snow days flights move too, and tracking means the pick up moves with them.

Keep your telephone reachable. On a bad morning the driver may need to tell you they are coming from a different direction, or that they are ten minutes behind.

When it is actually fine

Most of the winter. This gets written about because the bad days are memorable, but the ordinary January morning here is cold, grey and entirely unremarkable to drive in, and the whole system of roads is built by people who have done this every year of their lives.

The snowbelt is a reason to plan properly, not a reason to be nervous.
