Booking a pick up before six in the morning
Routine when arranged the day before, and often impossible when asked for at midnight. The reason is not reluctance, it is how drivers are staffed.
The desk turns down more requests for early pick ups than for anything else, and almost always for the same reason: they arrive too late.
This note explains why, so the next one arrives in time.
How an early run gets staffed
A driver taking a 4:30 am pick up is awake at 3:30 and at the vehicle by 4:00. That is a decision made the previous evening, not a decision made at midnight when a request lands.
Operators build the first runs of the day into a roster the day before. Once that roster is set, a request arriving at 11:00 pm for a 4:30 am pick up has to find somebody who had not planned to be awake and is willing to change that. Occasionally there is somebody. Usually there is not.
Booked by the previous afternoon, the same run is entirely ordinary. The desk arranges early starts every week through the winter and they are the most reliable bookings on the sheet, because everything about them was decided calmly.
The notice that actually works
- Pick up before 6:00 am: book by 5:00 pm the previous day. Earlier is better.
- Pick up between 6:00 and 8:00 am: book by the evening before.
- Anything later: same day is usually fine during desk hours.
The desk answers Monday through Saturday, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Eastern Time. A request for a Sunday morning pick up therefore needs to reach us on Saturday, and this is the single most common way a booking gets missed.
What it costs
Runs before 5:00 am typically carry an early hours supplement set by the operator, and it is named in your quote before you agree to anything. It is not large, and it is the reason somebody is awake.

Why an early start is often the right choice anyway
Counter intuitively, the earliest flights out of Hopkins are the ones least likely to be delayed. The aircraft slept at the airport, the crew is fresh, and the cascading delays that build through a day have not started yet.
An unpleasant alarm buys a materially better chance of leaving on time, which matters most when there is a connection at the other end.
Winter early starts
Everything in the lake effect advisory applies with more force before dawn, because the roads have had all night to accumulate and the ploughs have not necessarily reached the side streets yet.
For a pre dawn pick up from the eastern snowbelt in January, the desk will usually suggest an SUV and an extra fifteen minutes. Both are cheap insurance against a morning that cannot be repeated.

The driver's details come to you the evening before, so there is no uncertainty at four in the morning about which vehicle is yours.
